This survey is looking at the ways in which people choose to participate in mountaineering activities, and the motivations behind their choices.  We wish to better understand the ways people participate so that we can provide more tailored support.

For the purpose of this survey ‘climbing and hill walking activities’ have been split down to:

Hill walking -  including scrambling, long-distance walking, trekking
Rock climbing – outdoor climbing including bouldering, trad climbing, sport climbing, ice climbing, via-ferrata
Indoor climbing – Indoor or artificial bouldering and roped climbing
Mountaineering – including ski mountaineering, alpine climbing, multi-day expeditions

Please also read the following definitions for the benefit of the survey:

Informal membership group - These are groups or networks where there are no formal membership requirements. It could be a group which meets at a climbing wall (such as an improvers group, or a seniors coffee, cake and climb group) or a group that is co-ordinated via social media (such as a meet-up group, or Facebook group)

Formal membership group - These are more formal groups or clubs where it is likely that you have completed a membership form, or similar, to join the group. It is likely that there is a committee or group of people running the group and it is likely that you receive direct mailings from them. This group is likely to have rules for members or maybe a formal constitution with an Annual Meeting (AGM) for members. This group could already be affiliated to the BMC or another umbrella body (such as the Ramblers or Scouting/Guiding or Mountaineering Scotland)
