The standard rate of Insurance Premium Tax (IPT) will rise to 12% from 1 June 2017 (it is currently 10% and was 5% as recently as 2010). IPT is a tax on insurers and so any impact on premiums depends on insurers’ commercial decisions, although providers usually pass on these costs.

Charities do not benefit from an exemption so will be impacted. A survey of 30 charities in 2011 found that their total IPT bill was £591,000 and amounted to 0.4% of their overall tax bill. Further details can be found in the original Charity Tax Map.

The Charity Tax Group (CTG) represents charities on tax issues and is running this survey to quantify the cost implications of recent increases to IPT. Further information about CTG can be found at www.charitytaxgroup.org.uk. Further information on IPT can be found here.
