Street Works UK: Proposed Amendments to Volume 1 and 2 of the Publications Consultation

You are invited to review the proposed amendments to volume 1 in the linked document and provide feedback.
 
The consultation is open to any organisation with interests in the positioning and colour coding of underground utility and Highway Authority apparatus, and is running until Tuesday 31st October.

1.Which sector do you work in, or are you responding on behalf of?
2.Volume 1 and 2 have been amalgamated into a single publication to reduce the duplication across the two documents, whilst retaining the core purpose and recommendations of both publications.

3.The scope of the document has been expanded from solely installing apparatus in the footways and carriageways to now include grass verges, agricultural land, cycle tracks and installations below railway and tram lines.

4.The new version includes a more comprehensive re-edited identification table (table 1). Colour coding is unchanged from the previous version however some depths and distances have been updated.

5.Service connection recommendations are now also within scope. The previous version focused on mains and trunk apparatus and did not specifically reference end user service connection apparatus. the new version includes multiple examples of separation guidance.

6.For apparatus installed in verges we have introduced multiple verge datum point scenarios, including specific allowances for lower risk apparatus such as telecoms and ducted street lighting furniture.

7.At various points in the document, guidance has been provided for scenarios where the minimum depth of apparatus and proximity clearance to other assets cannot be achieved, predominantly the utilisation of a risk assessment approach.

8.A more comprehensive explanation of district heating and heat networks including explanatory diagrams. The EPG recognises the importance and recent expansion of these networks to achieve government net zero targets within the energy sector.

9.We have produced a new appendix (Appendix B) to include actual photographic examples of marker systems and identification aids. The EPG believes including real life images will help reduce damage to underground assets as this document is included in the NRSWA training and accreditation process.
