Involvement of Young People in Tenant Participation and Scrutiny A Thematic Study

Aiming to establish a baseline of current participation and scrutiny practice with 16 – 34 year olds, the results of this research project will assist landlords to further develop activities and opportunities with this often difficult to engage sector of the population. TIS encourages all landlords to participate to give us an accurate view of current practice and identify challenges, opportunities, and good practice that can be shared throughout Scotland.
24% of Scotland’s population is aged between 16 – 34 years old, some of whom will be tenants or applicants of social housing. However, at present, it is unclear clear how many young tenants participate in landlord decision making, and if there are opportunities available that specifically target this sector of the population.
To assist the sector to develop a clearer understanding of this topical issue, the Tenants Information Service (TIS) has been commissioned by the Scottish Government to conduct a thematic study with all Scottish Social Housing Landlords with regard to the involvement of young people in tenant participation and scrutiny activities.
The study aims to identify:
Current engagement practice across the social rented sector;
Opportunities and challenges to involve young tenants;
Good practice examples that can be shared across the sector;
What needs to be in place to drive forward engagement with young tenants in Scotland.
