The House of Commons Women and Equalities Committee recently launched an inquiry into older people and employment. MPs are looking at current Government policies to help people extend their working lives, and considering further steps which could be taken to tackle the day-to-day issues facing older people in the workplace.

* 6. In the recent Budget, the government announced two initiatives designed to give individuals the opportunity to retrain and upskill at all points in their life.

1. £40 million was allocated to 'lifelong learning pilots' testing different approaches to retraining and upskilling throughout working lives;

2. £5 million was allocated to increase the number of 'returnships' offering routes back to employment for people who have taken lengthy career breaks.
