Introduction

We want to hear your views and opinions on the use of colon capsules and computer learning to help investigate and diagnose bowel related problems.

Why?

As new services are developed and tested it’s important to have the views of patients and the public so services can be designed based on your feedback and observations and new technology can be successfully integrated into supporting and delivering medical care.

What are colon capsules?

The NHS uses a variety of technologies to support Doctors and Nurses as they care for patients.
One technology that is being developed and increasingly used are colon capsules.

Question Title

Image
Colon capsules (approximately the size of a large vitamin tablet) are swallowed by patients.

The capsules contain miniature cameras which take thousands of photos as they pass through the patient’s digestive system. The photos are recorded on a wireless device and the capsule is entirely disposable. Once it has passed through the patient it is simply flushed away – retrieval is not required.

It is now possible for computers to help Doctors and Nurses analyse the images that are captured by the capsule. The computers can highlight images that it thinks the clinician should examine in further detail.

The technology could potentially help with faster diagnosis and reduce waiting times and lists for patients.

We would like your views and opinions about this technology and service by Monday 13 April 2020.
