Workshop - Involving volunteers with learning disabilities and autism, 10 September 2019, 1pm-4.30pm

FREE* Peer Learning workshop: Involving volunteers with learning disabilities and autism

Tuesday 10 September 2019, 1pm - 4.30pm

People with learning disabilities and autism have a broad range of valuable skills, experiences and perspectives to contribute to your volunteering programme.  However, they often face barriers to access and a lack of appealing volunteering opportunities.  With the right support and understanding, they can be an untapped resource of dedicated and committed volunteers.

This practical and interactive session will explore the barriers faced by people with learning disabilities and autism and the simple and practical steps that organisations can take to reduce the barriers.  We will identify good practice in terms of volunteer roles, recruitment and outreach, application forms and interviews, working with support workers, support and supervision, communication, ‘mate crime’ and managing challenging behaviour.

The session will be led by Amber Plumbly, Volunteer Manager at Volunteering Matters.  Amber manages the Futures East project, which supports people aged 16-25 who have learning disabilities or are on the autism spectrum to find and sustain volunteering roles within local communities in East London.  Amber also manages Into Hackney, a mentoring project which alleviates social isolation in adults aged 25 – 50 with learning disabilities, supporting clients with volunteering, wellbeing, health and social activities.
