BACKGROUND
Purpose:

The partnership of Classics for All and the Classical Association is aware of a decline in GCSE and A Level Classics over the last few years and has anecdotal data about causes including a crowded curriculum, teacher shortages, the onerous nature of some of the exams, lack of clarity over assessment requirements and the loss of AS levels.
The partnership wishes to better understand the reasons for the decline in Classics teaching – in particular their relative significance and interconnections - and also to compile rigorous data that will help to make a compelling argument for policy, practice and possibly examination reform.
Use of data:
The survey is being hosted and analysed by evaluators Annabel Jackson Associates Ltd. Classics for All and the Classical Association will have access to the data, including the individual responses. Annabel Jackson Associates Ltd will write a report that will only contain aggregate responses, which will be used for campaigning, planning and support purposes.
Importance:
This is the first survey of its kind. Examination boards do not report consistent data on Classics subjects. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to rigorous data on trends and help to steer action by Classics for All and the Classical Association going forward.
Structure:
The questionnaire asks for descriptive data and evaluative judgements for each of the four Classics subjects at each KS. Each has a filter question so you are routed past questions that are not relevant to you.
Deadline:
Please reply by December 14th 2021.
