Short Breaks for parents and carers of children and young people with disabilities in Hull

Hull City Council (HCC) has a statutory duty to make a range of short break services available to meet the needs of disabled children and young people to enable their parents and carers to receive a break from caring.

NHS Hull Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) supports HCC in commissioning these services.

Short Breaks for children and young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities come in many different forms and can:

·         Provide opportunities for these children/young people to fulfil their potential through safe

·         enjoyable experiences with or without their parent/carer

·         Give parents/carers a break for caring, allowing them time to do day-to-day tasks, spend time with other family members, leisure activities or engage in education/training opportunities.

·         Enhance the abilities of parents/carers to care more efficiently

Short Breaks can range from a few hours, an evening, overnight, weekend stays or longer. They can occur during the day, the evening, weekends and school holidays and can take place in or out of the home environment, in the community or in a residential setting.

We are working with Hull Parent Forum to understand what activities children and young people can access to give them and their families a Short Break. We want to understand what barriers there might be preventing access to these activities and how we can improve these services across the city.

This survey is anonymous and your response is important to us in shaping future services.

There will be opportunities for further consultation going forward.
