Survey for groups and organisations

Following the closure of the John Hastie Museum in 2011, a group of local volunteers formed The Strathaven John Hastie Museum Trust. This local charity aims to keep the story of Strathaven alive by hosting regular exhibitions, adding to the local collection of artefacts, and looking to establish a permanent ‘community owned’ museum, fit for the 21st Century.

The Ballgreen Hall & ex Library Complex, on Glasgow Road in Strathaven has emerged as a place which could house a new museum and community facility, and the Trust are exploring the feasibility of taking on this building on behalf of the community. At this stage, the intention is to redevelop the building to include the following facilities – but these are initial views and may change depending on what the community tell us:

·       An exhibition hall, focussed on rolling, innovative exhibits rather than permanent displays.

·       A community room and facilities.

·       A training / workshop room.

·       Storage space for the town’s historical collections.

·       Residential flats for rent, which will contribute to financial sustainability.

If the proposal to take on the Ballgreen Hall is to succeed, the project needs to provide services and facilities that address needs in the town, must work well in partnership with other local groups, and complement the existing services and facilities in the town (rather than displacing them).

To make sure this happens, we want to hear from other groups and organisations that are active in Strathaven and Avondale. Please take a few minutes to fill in this short survey on behalf of your organisation. Your views, along with those from our wider community survey (available here) will shape plans for the Ballgreen Hall.

We are being supported by Community Enterprise. If you need any help completing this survey, or would prefer to give your views verbally, please contact Andrew at andrew@communityenterprise.co.uk or call 01506 862227.
