Borrow Shop (BO-SH) Survey

Hi there!

Thank you for taking the time to read this. We are individuals from the local Malmesbury community and are looking to set up a 'Borrow Shop' in Malmesbury (BOSH for short!).

What is a BOSH?

- A BOSH is a physical shop, where individuals from the local community can rent items such as lawnmowers, camping gear, kitchen appliances, sports equipment, musical instruments, toolkits, sewing machines etc., anything which has been donated by our local community to rent! These items are typically things which we have in our houses but don't use very often and are often left sitting dusty in cupboards and garages.

Have you ever thought…
1. My trousers have ripped if only I had a sewing machine to quickly fix them, but I don’t want to invest in buying one just for this.
2. I need to clean my windows, it would be great to borrow a ladder for the weekend.
3. I need to trim the hedge this weekend, but I don’t need to buy a trimmer, as I only use it twice a year!
4. I have a great toolbox but I rarely use it, maybe someone in the community could use it when I don’t need it?

5. I would love to take the kids camping but buying a new tent and all the camping equipment is expensive.

Having a BOSH in our local community would mean:
1. Individuals from the community could save money and space as they would be able to rent items, preventing the need to buy new items which are typically not used frequently and often spend time idly in a shed/cupboard!
2. Individuals help prevent the climate and ecological crisis - renting items instead of buying new ones reduces excessive consumption, preventing the huge resources, energy and impact which occur as a result of making new items.
3. Helping individuals in the community access products that they might not be able to afford/have the space to host, as renting items will be much cheaper than buying them brand new.
4. In the long term, money could be raised through the Malmesbury BOSH, which can be donated back into other Malmesbury community projects.

BOSHs are run by the community for the community.

So this is where you come in! We would love to understand the demand for a BOSH in Malmesbury. We want to know whether individuals would use this service (i.e rent items) or would want to donate their unused/infrequently used items to be rented out to the community.
