Peer Learning: Recruiting and Supporting Volunteers with Physical and Learning Disabilities, 21 June

FREE* Peer Learning: Recruiting and Supporting Volunteers with Physical and Learning Disabilities, Wednesday 21 June 2017, 11am - 1pm

This practical and interactive workshop will be led by Lorna Grazette and Rob Johnson from REAL, a local Tower Hamlets based organisation that has been helping disabled and non-disabled people work together to share information, provide support and make change happen for over twenty years. Further information about Real at http://www.real.org.uk/   Over 50% of their volunteers are disabled.

The session will explore good practice in involving volunteers with a range of disabilities including physical impairments and learning disabilities (e.g. dementia, autism etc), specifically:
• Thinking about your organisation’s readiness to involve disabled volunteers and clarifying what and why you want to improve
• Making adjustments in your recruitment, induction and management/support procedures (e.g. accessible application forms and interviews, talking through potential volunteers’ access needs and barriers, adjusting volunteer roles and tasks, managing expectations, involving support workers, thinking about low-cost adjustments, data protection and sharing confidential information about a person’s disability etc).
• Practical tools that you can use e.g. access and emergency evacuation questionnaire
• Legal aspects such as anti-discrimination legislation (Equalities Act), DBS checks for staff and other volunteers, Health & Safety and insurance in relation to disabled volunteers.
• Creating a ‘disability friendly’ culture – including use of terminology and language

During the session you will identify challenges for your organisation and come up with practical solutions.

The session will take place at REAL, Jack Dash House, 2 Lawn House Close, London E14 9YQ.  The venue is easily accessible by public transport.  If you have any access needs, including accessible car parking, please state this in your booking.
