Minimally Invasive General Surgery Training in the UK: Opportunities, Experience and Expectations

Thank you very much for taking the time to complete our survey. Minimally invasive surgery is now the standard of care in several subspecialties of general surgery including colorectal and bariatric surgery and its implementation is increasing in other complex areas such as HPB and upper GI surgery.  However, the quality and opportunities of minimally invasive training offered in the UK and trainees’ perception of their own minimally invasive training remain unknown.

If you are a general surgical trainee (or non-trainee) at Core training (CT), Specialty training (ST) or post CCT fellowship level then we would like to hear from you by completing this survey. The survey will take approximately 12 min to complete and you may find it useful to have your logbook accessible as you do so.

The interruption to elective surgery and surgical training by COVID-19 will have variable effect on training depending on specialty and region. There are contingencies for training and ARCPs which aim to address this short term impact on training. However, we are looking at longer term training and experience in minimally invasive surgery notwithstanding this short term interruption. We hope this will paint a picture of the minimally invasive surgical training in the UK and help optimise opportunities and experiences for the current and future generations of surgical trainees across the country.
