Thanks for joining our #PUSHBACK
We were hugely inspired and motivated by the award winning documentary, PUSH, which we aired during our housing festival. If you haven’t seen it already, it’s available on Vimeo.
The film follows Leilani Farha UN Special Rapporteur Housing as she visits cities around the world and investigates how ordinary people are being pushed and priced out of housing by multinational companies, including Blackstone, which, it was recently revealed, has been involved in buying real estate in Brighton & Hove. Earlier this year, Blackstone bought up the IQ student accommodation portfolio for £4.7 billion from Goldman Sachs and Wellcome, the BIGGEST EVER private property deal in the UK. IQ own the existing Abacus house near London Road and Sawmills on Lewes Road. We know there are other major actors at play too, pension companies for example.
This raises the serious issue of who owns our cities and who are our cities for? Is it the people or private business interests?
The good news is that the #PUSHBACK has started, and YOU too can be part of this fight by hosting one of our exclusive signs on your home. Designed to look like estate agent boards, they carry messages that provoke thought, as well as starting the discussion around solutions.
