Apply for our US Girl Can Leadership Academy

Building on our US Girl's Can brand, we're launching a year-long US Can Leadership Academy (USGCLA).

We have spaces for eight student volunteers on the USGCLA, selected by application and interview. Places are open to students at Sussex and, if selected, you will need to be able to commit time (approximately two hours per week and more during US Girl Can week) to training opportunities and to support Sussexsport’s ever-growing US Girl's Can campaign, which aims to increase female participation in fitness, sport and wellbeing activities on campus.

You will also act as a US Girl's Can brand ambassador and receive training for this aspect of the role, which will involve creating blog and video content throughout the year for Sussexsport and Active US social media channels.

As part of the volunteer position you will also be expected to:

  • Become a USGC brand ambassador and run our US Girls Can social media channels
  • Obtain feedback from peers about sport at Sussex by attending sessions and via social media and contribute to Active US and wider Sussexsport planning and management discussions.
  • Provide Blogs/Vlogs throughout the year to aid in inspiring others to take part in physical activity
  • Post regularly on personal and Sussexsport/Active US social media channels about USGC opportunities, events and other relatable topics.
  • Help/deliver activity for women at Sussex with a focus on our 2 campaign weeks that run in the autumn and spring term
  • Attend Active US and US Girl’s Can sessions regularly
  • Commit to training sessions and contribute back to USGC/Active US activity when qualified/knowledgeable.

In return, Sussexsport will provide you with:

  • Training opportunities such as First aid, Mental health first aid in sport and sport-specific qualifications
  • UGCLA kit – Leader Shirt and an US Girls Can T-shirt
  • Access to Active US sports sessions
  • Mentoring from 2 female leaders within sport (Sarah Hall – University of Sussex Students’ Union Activities Manager and Megan Hurst – Lecturer in Social Psychology)
  • Networking Opportunities with other students/staff/leaders at talks and networking events

Our US Girl's Can campaign aims to raise engagement levels in fitness, sport and wellbeing activities amongst all self-identifying women, transgender and non-binary students and staff at Sussex.
