Camden + Islington Trauma Informed Network Survey for people with lived experience of using services

What is the network?
We are part of Camden and Islington's Trauma-Informed Network. This network is for people who are interested in learning more and sharing their own ideas about how to provide trauma-informed support.

The network is open to anyone who has an interest in or who is passionate about this issue.
This network is for people currently or with lived experience of accessing services in Camden + Islington, volunteers, peer mentors and people who run and work in services.

Why do we exist?
We want to bring everyone together to support each other and learn how to improve services and provide more appropriate support for people who have faced/still face complex challenges and trauma across Camden and Islington.

This is a very exciting project and is in its early stages!
By filling in this survey, you'll be helping to shape the network.

What do we mean by trauma?

Trauma can be a single experience or many repeated experiences where a person’s self-preservation (safety) was, or perceived to be threatened and they felt helpless, frightened and alone. Trauma is part of the human experience and so are responses to it.

What do we mean by Trauma-Informed Support?
Trauma-Informed Support is a way of supporting people that recognises people may have specific needs or responses as a result of past or ongoing trauma. Trauma-Informed support can involve many different things, including building trusting, open, supportive and non-judgemental relationships and services.

For example:

Non-Trauma Informed Responses:
- Blames individual for poor choices
- Punishes ‘aggressive’ or ‘difficult’ behaviours
- People are seen as a risk instead of understanding causes or reasons behind behaviours
- Non-personal support
- Lack of time to build relationships with workers
- Feeling unheard, little time to listen

Trauma-Informed Responses:
- Genuinely caring and interested in your needs/wellbeing/recovery
- Feeling listened to and heard
- Understanding and empathetic
- Work together to solve problems and find solutions together
- Works at your pace
- Mutual respect and trust
- Values and accepts you as a person, for who you are
- Non-judgemental
- Makes effort to you and your ways of coping

Why are we doing a survey?

This anonymous survey is to help us understand more about:

- What people’s understandings of trauma and trauma-informed support are
- Your opinions on this type of support
- What kind of services exist that are already doing trauma-informed support
- Which services are not providing this kind of support
