This is an international, collaborative research project to validate the EMDR Clinical Supervision Scale (ECSS-42).

There are three sections:
1. Participant Information Sheet
2. Research Consent Form
3. ECSS-42

TITLE OF PROJECT: Validation of the EMDR Therapy Clinical Supervision Scale (ECSS-42).

Invitation: The University of Worcester engages in a wide range of research which seeks to provide a greater understanding of the world around us, to contribute to improved human health and well-being and to provide answers to social, economic and environmental problems.

We want to invite you to take part in one of our research projects. Before you decide whether to take part, it is important that you understand why the research is being done, what it will involve for you, what information we will ask from you, and what we will do with that information.

Please take time to read this document carefully. Feel free to contact the Principal Investigator of the research Dr Derek Farrell MBE, email:

What is the purpose of the research?
We are currently wishing to investigate the potential effectiveness of using the EMDR therapy Clinical Supervision Scale (ECSS-42). This is a 42-item scale to measure EMDR therapists’ experiences of EMDR Therapy Clinical Supervision.

Our goal is to:
1.      Test the ECSS-42 for fitness for purpose
2.     Test its robustness as a scale
3.     Test its overall validity

What does the study involve; research participants?
The study involves completing the ECSS-42 via a premium version of Survey Monkey – this is a secure, encrypted research resource. We estimate that the ECSS-42 will take approximately 11-15 minutes to complete. We intend to recruit a minimum of 420 EMDR therapists internationally.
Who is undertaking the research?
Dr Derek Farrell - Lead Researcher

Who is funding the research?
This is an unfunded study.

Who has oversight of the research?
The Research Ethics Panel has approved the College of Business, Psychology and Sports research in line with the University’s Research Ethics Policy. The University of Worcester acts as the “Data Controller” for personal data collected through its research projects & is subject to the General Data Protection Regulation 2016. We are registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office, and our Data Protection Officer is Helen Johnstone ( For more on our approach to Information Assurance and Security visit:

Why have I been invited to take part?
You have received this invitation because you are an EMDR therapist who has completed an accredited/ certified EMDR therapy training programme.

Do I have to take part?
Participation in the study is entirely voluntary. As the data provided is anonymous, there is no way for the research team to identify any particular research participant or their responses. Therefore, if for any reason you decide to withdraw from the study, it would be impossible to remove the data you have already provided. However, if you have concerns about this, please contact the Principal Investigator: Dr Derek Farrell MBE –
