Association of Chartered Physiotherapists for People with Learning Disabilities (ACPPLD)

Evidence indicates that abdominal massage could be used by an appropriately trained professional as part of a total bowel management programme to improve pain, discomfort, frequency and reduce laxative use in people with a learning disability who have constipation(PHE,2016:Connor etal.2014:Emly & Marriot, 2017).

Learning disability physiotherapists are well placed to train carers in abdominal massage for constipation due to the knowledge and skills in optimum positioning, complex postures, anatomy, massage/manual therapy, social set up and the flexibility to cater to the person with learning disabilities in their environment and routine.

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the ACPPLD are excited to support the development of a Community of Practice (CoP) for Abdominal Massage for Constipation (AMfC) as part of a total bowel management approach for people with learning disabilities

A CoP is a ‘group of active practitioners in a specific field who share ideas, acquire and pool knowledge, experiences, best practice and support each other.’

The ACPPLD CoP for AMfC have developed a Survey Monkey to gather information about the provision of AMfC Nationally and plan the next steps in improving the management of adults with a learning disability who have constipation.

Thank you in advance for completing the survey.

You can access the survey @ https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/WT6YR5J
