Help COWS understand lungworm better!

Lungworm are a serious issue in cattle and disease patterns are changing potentially leading to increasing production and welfare problems on farms.
Help COWS understand the lungworm picture across the UK, in particular where treatments do not appear to be working as expected.
Following a VMD-supported industry workshop held at Moredun in March 2023, it was identified that there is a lack of consistency in approach to assessing the efficacy of anthelmintics used against bovine lungworm. Taking a standardised approach to assessing wormer efficacy will help this.
To improve our understanding on this subject, an agreed pro-forma has been devised – see below. COWS would encourage veterinary surgeons to submit as many forms/cases as they wish over the year, not just one.
The survey will remain open throughout 2024. The collated, anonymised data from this survey will be used to form the basis of future discussions around this issue.
Note for private veterinary surgeons
If you wish for colleagues who work in veterinary surveillance to assist with your investigation please contact APHA if you are in England or Wales, or SRUC if you are in Scotland (click on hyperlinks or find contact details at the end).
Please use this form to collate as much herd information as possible. Please supply information from cases regardless of whether treatments have been successful or not.
If submitting faecal samples to a laboratory, please use this form as well as your routine submission form. Faecal samples are ideally collected on day of treatment and 14 days later. The client and vet practice details can be outlined on the routine submission form.
If there is a suspected lack of efficacy, please ensure the VMD and pharmaceutical company are notified and supplied with information from this form and any subsequent laboratory results. Pharmaceutical companies might support further testing.
