Fortune|SurveyMonkey poll: Republicans’ conditional support for a lockdown

Fortune|SurveyMonkey poll: Republicans’ conditional support for a lockdown

While majorities of Democrats and independents support a national "stay-at-home" order in the U.S., Republicans' support is conditional on who exactly is proposing it. In a new Fortune|SurveyMonkey poll, 65% of people in the U.S. say they would support a national “stay at home” order, including 92% of Democrats, 69% of independents, and 37% of Republicans.

However, if the national “stay at home” order were proposed by President Trump, support among Republicans rises to 54%, holds steady among independents at 69%, and falls slightly among Democrats (to 85%). And, if the national “stay at home” order were proposed by Joe Biden, support overall falls to 59% overall, with all of that difference resulting from a fall in support among Republicans (from 37% to 23%). Independents’ and Democrats’ support is consistent regardless of whether the “stay at home” order was proposed by Joe Biden or not.

All told, Republicans are twice as likely to support a national “stay at home” order that is proposed by Trump than one that is proposed by Biden.

A wide majority of the public (83%) considers the spring's stay-at-home orders to have been important in slowing the spread of the coronavirus in their area, including fully 64% who consider it to have been "very important." Nearly every Democrat (96%) says the stay-at-home orders were important. Republicans were less likely than others to consider the stay-at-home order to be “very important.”

Joe Biden gets higher marks than President Trump on his ability to handle social unrest (52% vs. 42%), the federal response to the coronavirus pandemic (51% vs. 43%), and criminal justice (49% vs. 46%). But, more people say they would trust Trump than Biden to handle the economy (49% vs. 46%).
