Almost one third (32%) of Americans are thinking about leaving their current carrier in the next 12 months and over half (55%) believe there is “a lot” of choice when deciding between mobile carriers these days. 

  • Of those who have definite plans to abandon their current carrier in the next year:
    • 66 percent say that their current total cost is higher than they believe it should be, compared to just 40 percent of those who have no plans to switch. 
    • 24 percent are AT&T customers, higher than the other 3 major carriers (17% or lower).
    • 25 percent think a merger between T-Mobile and Sprint could be mostly positive for people like them.

How does the planned merger between T-Mobile and Sprint resonate with current customers? 

  • Those likely to be directly impacted by the merger, T-Mobile and Sprint customers of today, have the greatest shares who view it positively (34% of T-Mobile customers and 21% of Sprint customers.
  • However, nearly seven in 10 (68%) think it won’t make any difference for people like themselves or don’t know enough about what it might mean to voice an opinion.
