Quartz|SurveyMonkey poll: pay and workplace culture

Are you happy with your salary? With your boss? Do you feel like you can share your opinions at work? Our new poll for Quartz asked more than 2,000 workers in the U.S. for their answers to those questions and more. Here's what we found:

  • A large majority of workers (72 percent) believe their employers do their best to pay employees well.
  • But, only about half (51 percent) say they’re satisfied with their current salary.
  • More than two-thirds of workers (68 percent) are comfortable sharing their opinions at work.
    • Men are more likely than women to feel comfortable speaking up (72 vs. 63 percent)
    • Black workers are more likely than White workers to feel comfortable sharing their opinions (73 vs. 67 percent), though Hispanics trail at 65 percent
  • Men and women are equally likely to say they've:
    • Earned more money at a previous job (46 percent)
    • Left a job only because it didn't pay enough (49 percent)
    • Asked for a raise (60 percent)
  • Nearly half of workers in the U.S. (48 percent) say they can be "fully themselves" at work.
