How do you build an inclusive workplace?

How do you build an inclusive workplace?

Diversity at work starts with an inclusive environment. But creating that environment can be challenging.

It’s been a few weeks since our webinar, “The practical guide to building an inclusive workplace” (which, somewhat symbolically, aired on 2018’s Equal Pay Day for Black Women). Didn’t catch it? Here’s a quick summary of what you missed.

We gathered a panel of experts:

  • Joelle Emerson, CEO of Paradigm
  • Becky Cantieri, Chief People Officer here at SurveyMonkey
  • Rhisa Muse, Diversity & Inclusion Program Manager here at SurveyMonkey

We talked about:

  • How to build the case for D&I resources
  • Why measurement matters, and how to do it
  • How to turn employee feedback into insights and action
  • Practical lessons learned in working to build an inclusive workplace

Over 500 people registered to hear what our panel had to say about challenges and strategies around fostering a sense of inclusion and belonging in the workplace (if you were one of them, thank you for watching!).

Diversity and inclusion may be in the news, but there’s still work to be done. In our survey of nearly 10,000 US workers, 1 in 4 said they don’t feel like they belong at their company. This number jumps to nearly 1 in 3 for black workers.

Diversity and inclusion programs aren’t just the right thing to do—there’s a real business case for them. For example, companies in the top quartile for racial and ethnic diversity are 35% more likely to have financial returns above their respective national industry medians.

One quick tip for building inclusion: Identify one challenge or metric that you want to make progress on. Start with goals to improve the percentage. (This one’s from Joelle, CEO of Paradigm.)

Listening is the cornerstone of a successful initiative. Gathering candid employee feedback is one of the first steps to developing a program that effectively addresses your company’s needs. Start asking the right questions with our belonging and inclusion survey template, developed in partnership with Paradigm.

Good news: our webinar is available on-demand! Sign up to watch it.
