  1. Define the question. Ethnography works best with an open question about behavior or context, such as "how do people actually decide what to buy in this aisle," rather than a question a multiple-choice survey could already answer.
  2. Select and recruit participants. Because sample sizes are small, participants need to represent the specific behavior or context you're studying, not a broad demographic slice. Screening questions matter more here than in a typical survey.
  3. Observe in the natural setting. The researcher spends time in the participant's home, workplace, store, or digital environment, watching behavior unfold without steering it. This can range from a single hour-long visit to weeks or months embedded with a group.
  4. Take field notes and gather artifacts. Detailed, descriptive notes capture not just what happened but the surrounding context: the environment, the sequence of actions, the things participants said in passing.   6. Report findings as thick description. Instead of a single number, an ethnographic report tells the story of what was observed, with enough concrete detail that someone who wasn't there can understand the pattern and why it matters.
