Neutral response bias occurs when respondents consistently pick middle-of-the-road answers, avoiding extreme options even if they have strong feelings. 

Respondents might give neutral answers to a customer feedback survey when they don’t want to appear overly critical or enthusiastic.

Acquiescence bias arises when respondents agree with statements regardless of their true opinions. For instance, in an employee satisfaction survey, participants may tick “agree” for most statements, out of habit or to avoid disagreement, rather than truly expressing their views.

Question order bias occurs when the order of survey questions influences respondents’ answers. 

For example, let’s suppose that a survey asks about overall job satisfaction before asking about specific job benefits. In this case, respondents may be more likely to respond to the second question in a way that aligns with their previous response to the first question. 

Social desirability bias occurs when survey participants answer questions in a way they believe is socially acceptable rather than truthfully.

For example, in a health survey, respondents may underreport unhealthy behaviours such as smoking or fast-food consumption to appear healthier.

Interviewer bias occurs when the interviewer’s behaviour, tone or phrasing influences survey responses. 

Interviewer bias can arise as a result of the interviewer’s enthusiasm, question structure, or non-verbal cues such as facial expressions and body language.

This bias occurs when respondents subconsciously alter their answers based on the interviewer’s cues. For example, if the interviewer expresses enthusiasm about a particular product, respondents may be more likely to give positive feedback.

Reporting bias occurs when data analysis selectively emphasises or ignores specific responses. For example, a company may highlight only positive customer feedback while downplaying negative responses.

Some survey methods are more prone to bias than others. Selecting the right method will ultimately depend on your survey’s goals, your audience and the resources available to you.

Consider these method types when deciding how to distribute your survey:

  • Online surveys are popular because only motivated individuals may participate. However, those who feel indifferent may simply ignore the survey.
  • Due to the presence of an interviewer, phone surveys might make respondents feel pressured to give socially desirable answers, leading to response bias.
  • In-person surveys encourage interviewer bias. Your interviewer’s body language, tone and phrasing could influence responses.
  • Postal surveys often experience high non-response rates, which can result in non-response bias if only a specific type of respondent returns the survey.
  • Panel surveys risk participant fatigue, which can lead to response bias. Longstanding panel members may give less thoughtful responses over time.
  • Use random sampling: Rather than relying on convenience samples, you should randomly select participants to ensure diverse representation. A well-chosen survey sample is key to obtaining valid and truthful responses.
  • Increase sample size: A larger, more diverse sample can minimise bias and provide more representative results.
  • Implement stratified sampling to balance demographic groups: With this sampling method, every individual in the given population has the same chance of being selected. Researchers and analysts use stratified sampling to guarantee that they can make valid statements about their target population.
  • Distribute surveys across multiple channels: To reach a broader audience, you can use multiple survey distribution methods, including online, phone and in-person. 
  • Use neutral and clear questions: Avoid leading, double-barrelled or loaded questions that may influence responses.
  • Avoid using jargon: Use clear and straightforward language so that all respondents interpret questions the same way.

Double-barrelled questions ask about two different things in a single question, making it difficult for respondents to provide an accurate answer.

  • Example: “Do you find our website easy to navigate and visually appealing?”
  • Why it’s bad: These types of questions force respondents to evaluate two concepts simultaneously and generate unclear or unreliable data.
  • Unbiased alternative: “How would you rate the navigation of our website?” (Include a separate question about the survey design.)

Loaded questions contain built-in assumptions that can pressure respondents into answering in a specific way.

  • Example: “What do you think about the harmful effects of social media?”
  • Why it’s bad: Loaded questions manipulate responses by embedding biased assumptions into the wording.
  • Unbiased alternative: “What are your thoughts on the effects of social media?”
